Charlie Chaplin

16th April, 1889 (London, UK) – 25th December, 1977 (Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland)

In our Torel Avantgarde, a hotel in the center of Porto, we pay tribute to Charlie Chaplin in one of our best hotel rooms: an Executive Royal, with a double bed, bathtub, and balcony overlooking the Douro.

In this room, the reference to the French actor and comedian is achieved through the black and white tones, which predominate in the room and the film rolls – a reference to his black and white films.

Details, such as the lamps with Charlie Chaplin’s characteristic hats, are also one of the highlights of this room.

Charlie Chaplin - Torel Avantgarde

As a surrealist in the 1930s, he created truly innovative sculptural forms, which sometimes resembled toys and games. As an existentialist, after the war he led the way in creating a style that epitomized philosophy’s interests in perception, alienation, and anxiety. He is remembered for his figurative work, which helped make the suffering human figure motif a popular symbol of post-war trauma.

Some of his Main Works:

Tall Figure
Spoon Woman
The Palace at 4 AM

Artistic Movements: Expressionism, Contemporary Art, Surrealism, Cubism, Modern Art.

“It is impossible to do a thing the way I see it because the closer I get the more differently I see.” – Alberto Giacometti
