Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro

21st November, 1857 (Lisbon, Portugal) – 6th November, 1929 (Lisbon, Portugal)

He was a depressive painter, strong, dark, and heavy.

These characteristics are represented in our Torel Avantgarde in a Classic room, with a double bed, through the large dark brown leather headboard.

Its classic style is represented in the black and gray carpet, with an equally classic pattern.

In our boutique hotel, in the center of Porto, we pay homage to this Portuguese painter.

Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro - Torel Avantgarde

He became the main painter of his generation and the master of realism in Portuguese painting, specializing in portraits.

After the proclamation of the Republic in Portugal, in 1910, he was a member of the commission that decided on the design of the new flag.

Columbano was captured with his tenebrism (chiaroscuro), which was so characteristic of him.

In the 1880s, he dedicated himself to the family to clear portraits of friends, which he later darkened into portraits of Portuguese intellectuals.

“We portray ourselves in everything we do! … We spend our lives confessing… Don’t you think so?” – Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro
